CHAPTER NO. 04

Thoughts behind spark collection

The next chapter of our Journal has arrived. This time, we’re taking you behind the scenes at Baun Studio as our designer, Nikoline, shares her creative process behind our latest collection, Spark.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Nikoline, and I am Head of Design at Baun. I am 25 years old and completed my bachelor's degree in Design and Business at KEA in early 2025, with a specialization in Sustainable Fashion Tech. I am driven by creativity and love to create and design. At Baun, I work on design from concept to finished product, where I am responsible for the design department. I work hands-on throughout the entire design process, from sketches, moodboards, and trend research to material selection, samples, tech packs, and technical details in close collaboration with our suppliers.

In my free time, you’ll often find me behind a sewing machine or working on knitting or crochet projects. Crafting and creative processes make me really happy, and I am a true DIY enthusiast. I also love hunting for vintage pieces to give them a new life, and my wardrobe is filled with everything from sequins to well-loved jeans that I’ve collected over the years.

What was the initial thought behind the title of this collection, and how does it reflect the mood we are trying to create?

The title of the collection, Spark, was inspired by the festive season and the energy of Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. We wanted the name to capture not just the literal sparkle of lights and decorations, but also the sense of excitement, joy, and new beginnings that this time of year brings. The collection reflects this mood through shimmering details, playful textures and prints, and designs that are meant to make you feel celebratory and confident.

When you drew the first sketch, what was the specific feeling or situation you wanted the wearer to experience?

When I drew the first sketch, I wanted the earer to feel confident, truly special, and like the light of the party. The idea was to capture the energy and sparkle of a festive celebration and translate it into pieces that make you feel playful, empowered, and ready to shine, whether it’s for a special occasion or just an ordinary day

What made these specific materials the right choice for this collection’s silhouettes?

We chose these materials because they bring the energy and sparkle of the collection to life. Shimmering fabrics, playful textures, and soft, tactile materials were essential to create silhouettes that feel both festive and wearable. Every choice was made to let the wearer move freely—whether celebrating, dancing, or simply enjoying the moment—while staying comfortable, reflecting light, and feeling confident and ready to shine.

As a designer, what is your favorite 'hidden' detail in this collection that people might not notice at first glance?

One of my favorite hidden details in this collection is how the fabrics catch and reflect light in motion. At first glance, it may seem like a simple shimmer or texture, but when the wearer moves—dancing or turning—the pieces truly come alive, creating a playful sparkle and emphasizing the fluidity of the silhouettes. It’s a small detail, but it perfectly captures the spirit of celebration and joy that runs through the entire collection. Oh, and as always I love the adjustable details and ties, which let the wearer personalize the fit and create different expressions.

If you had to pick one favorite item from the collection, which would it be, why and how would you style it?

This is a tricky one, but if I had to pick one favorite item from the collection, it would probably have to be the Vesper dress. I have a personal connection to it, as I worked on the fit for a looong time and faced quite a few challenges along the way. Trying it on at home for the first time, and realizing it finally worked, was such an amazing feeling. That said, I actually wore the Tawny cami top on New Year’s with a brown vintage tulle skirt and elegant stilettos - giving me full Carrie Bradshaw vibes, hehe.
